Hurtigruten Refurbishing its Fleet

Enhanced Passenger Experience with Interior Design to Cuisine Changes

TORONTO -   Passengers on Hurtigruten cruises will be treated to significant changes from the nature inspired interior design to the Coastal Kitchen fresh and locally focused cuisine that will be offered on its cruises. Hurtigruten is a world leader in expedition voyages, sailing to Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic's Spitsbergen and Norway's coast and to Europe in the spring and fall. GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours is the Canadian representative for Hurtigruten.

“Hurtigruten is undergoing its most extensive refurbishment in many years and passengers will benefit and delight in the enhanced comfort as well as the cruise experience itself from the cuisine served on board to the culture based excursions,” said Alan Law, GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours' director of sales and marketing.

The award-winning explorer cruise line Hurtigruten has begun the process of upgrading four of its 11 Norwegian Coastal ships, as well as adding a new expedition ship, the MS Spitsbergen -- its first in 10 years. The extensive refurbishment of the first two - MS Kong Harald and MS Polarlys - has been completed and already has received rave reviews from its passengers. The makeovers of the MS Nordkapp and MS Nordnorge will be completed in April and November 2016, respectively.

The new look, "New Artic Interior", includes the replacement of the cruise interior and furnishings with a new modern Scandinavian interior, drawing inspiration from the spectacular nature outside the panoramic windows. The new design entails a stylish and yet unpretentious feel and affects all of the ship's common areas -- reception foyers, cafes and bistro areas and the aft deck. The colours will be earthy and reflect the coast and the sea, while making use of many natural materials, such as wood, slate and leather. Designs and shapes are expected to bear a resemblance to those found in nature - such as the flow of the waves or the strength of the majestic fjords.

On the cuisine side, Hurtigruten has partnered with dozens of local food suppliers to develop the Coastal Kitchen concept. With seasonal ingredients, often harvested the same day, guests are able to enjoy the freshest and best Norwegian food available. A range of fresh pastries from the ship's own bakeries will be offered and barbeque stands are being added to the outside decks.

The popular ship's bar will be moved to the panoramic lounge, offering incredible views as guests enjoy an afternoon or evening cocktail. Passengers can now get fit in the fitness room and enjoy the world's best views.

Hurtigruten is doing a near-complete reconstruction of the MS Spitsbergen and is now undergoing adaptation for polar waters; upgrading the cabins, suites and public spaces for the 320 guests. The ship will join the fleet along the Norwegian Coastal Voyage route later this spring and replaces the MS Midnatsol, which will join the MS Fram in Antarctica for the 2016/17 season.

Hurtigruten is a world leader in expedition voyages, sailing to the most remote of destinations, including Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic's Spitsbergen, as well as year-round along Norway's coast and to Europe in the spring and fall. Hurtigruten has a fleet of 14 ships which each carry 100 to 646 guests and provide travellers cruising comfort, exceptional service, and go beyond traditional cruising by offering itineraries and journeys that get close to environments, wildlife and local people in the most remote parts of the world.

Hurtigruten Offers Special Kids Program on Antarctica Voyages

New Young Explorers Program Will Be Launched

TORONTO -   Experiencing the wonders and spectacular scenery of Antarctica shouldn't be reserved just for adults. It's just as important to get children to learn, appreciate and respect the unique environment and marine life and wildlife that call Antarctica home. Hurtigruten has introduced a new innovative educational program designed specifically for children travelling to Antarctica. GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours is the Canadian representative for Hurtigruten. Called The Young Explorers Program it will be officered on Antarctica Discovery Style voyages aboard the MS Midnatsol between November 2016 and March 2017.

“Antarctica is a trip of a lifetime and why not share that with your children or grandchildren and discover it together and best of all this Young Explorers Program is completely free,” said Alan Law, GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours' director of sales and marketing.

The Young Explorers Program, available on Antarctica Discovery Style voyages aboard the MS Midnatsol between November 2016 and March 2017, encourages young travelers to learn more about the distinct environments they encounter on their journey through the use of age-appropriate field research, games, re-enactments and lectures. Opportunities to assist the Expedition Team are an important part of the program, giving kids hand-on experiences and a chance to learn about the rigors of exploration. The Young Explorers Program which is complimentary is best suited for ages 7-13. It is a great way for parents or grandparents to share this trip with their children or grandchildren. The program was designed using the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) guidelines as the foundation.

Children will be greeted by Young Explorer Program staff upon embarkation, and a special "Introduction to Antarctica" program will prepare them for their journey to the white continent. Each young explorer will receive a field note workbook containing chapters focusing on science, polar history, photography and nautical studies. Science lessons will take place in the science center (which is also open to adults), where children will look into the biology and geology of the Southern Ocean through real field samples.

Polar history activities include a re-creation of the Amundsen party reaching the South Pole, while photography professionals give lessons to encourage young travelers to capture the majesty of Antarctica. Navigation officers are on hand to help teach nautical basics, which culminates with an exclusive meeting with the Captain. Each lesson completed in the workbook earns the young explorer one stamp; completing the workbook earns a prize and an official certificate. In addition, kids will be introduced to EcoChains one of the best new environmental card games, which will be incorporated into the program for play during the voyage.

Many young explorers are fascinated by the Expedition Team operation, and the Young Explorers Program allows youth to assist the team with their duties. On one Antarctica landing during the voyage, the kids are invited to help the staff set up the landing site before passengers go ashore, which may involve digging snow steps, carrying emergency equipment from the boat, placing flags and cones for path making, or standing post by a penguin colony with Expedition Team members. Explorers are accompanied by a staff member at all times.

The Young Explorers Program is available on all six Antarctica itineraries aboard the MS Midnatsol. Examples include:

  • Legendary Magellan Chilean Fjords and Antarctica, where guests celebrate the holidays in the fjords, Falkland Islands and Antarctica; 18 days, priced from $11,205 CAD per person, and
  • Discover Patagonia & Antarctica, an in-depth exploration of these two great sites; 16 days, priced from $9,665 CAD per person.

VARIETY CRUISES VOTED BEST BOUTIQUE CRUISE LINE WORLDWIDE

TORONTO -   Variety Cruises has been selected as the number one Boutique Cruise Line Worldwide by the annual USA Today Best of 10 contest. GLP Worldwide is the Canadian representative for Variety Cruises and Cuba Cruises in Canada.

“We are delighted that Variety Cruises won as it is such an exceptional cruise line that offers passengers a very personalized and culturally focused cruise experience to all the destinations it serves and we feel privileged to represent them in Canada” says Alan Law, director of sales and marketing for GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours.

The annual USA Today Best of 10 contest curates a select number of boutique cruise lines and invites its international readership to vote for their number one selection. USA Today has over 3 million readers daily and over 35 million online visitors each month to its digital edition.

Contenders in the Boutique Cruise Line category included notable cruise lines Seabourn, Crystal, Windstar, Sea Cloud, Lindblad-National Geographic, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Star Clippers, Silverseas, Ponant and others.

Variety Cruises owns and operates 11 upscale and casual Mega-Yachts between 4 and 5 stars with capacity of up to 72 guests. The cruise line was established upon the philosophy of connecting local communities and international travellers in a sustainable, non-intrusive way by restricting cruise operations to small sized upscale yachts that continue to exclusively dock in small as well as secluded ports of call otherwise unreachable by larger cruise lines. Over the years the small ship cruise experience formula continues to improve and adapt but the core is the people that add colour to every Variety Cruises' moment.

In 2016-2017 Variety Cruises will operate cruises in Greece, Turkey, the Adriatic, Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Seychelles, Madagascar, France, Italy, West Africa, the British Isles, and Brazil. 87% of Variety Cruises' former guests describe their experience as "exceptional" while 93% state a wish and intention to travel again with Variety Cruises in the future. Please visit www.glpworldwide.com for complete itineraries, pricing, terms and conditions for Variety Cruises that GLP offers.

GLP WORLDWIDE NORWAY VOYAGES BROCHURE NOW AVAILABLE

New Services, Menu, Ships and More in 2016/17

TORONTO -   GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours, the Canadian representative for Hurtigruten, has produced a new 2016-017 Coastal Voyages of Norway brochure and is now available to agents by contacting GLP Worldwide at www.glpworldwide.com or 1-(866) 760-1987.The new brochure provides prices in Canadian dollars.

“This new brochure is unlike any previous one with a more personalized approach with interviews and stories on one of the ship’s longest serving captains, an article on a cruise experience from a past passenger, a behind the scenes look at the cuisine that's served on board, and extensive details on itineraries, pricing and more” says Alan Law, director of sales and marketing for GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours.

A staple of Norwegian culture since 1893, Hurtigruten's fleet of modern ships offers a unique glimpse into Norwegian culture as they transport guests and locals alike along Norway's spectacular west coast, stopping at 34 ports of call between the cultural center of Bergen and Kirkenes, high above the Arctic Circle.

The new brochure details the extraordinary voyage and land opportunities available in 2016 and 2017 as well as an array of more than 45 optional excursions that help to personalize the voyage for each guest. With access to a selection of voyages all year long, travellers are rewarded with seasonal early booking discounts and special discounts for Canadian residents.

Hurtigruten has been a world leader in expedition voyages to both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and in 2016 they're expanding that concept to include the Coastal Norway route with new Expedition Style Voyages, available on three of Hurtigruten's ships. Expedition Style Voyages will offer everything travellers have come to expect from the Classic Voyage with additional opportunities to explore the spectacular coastline and culture in a more active and informative way.

Available on the MS Nordkapp, MS Nordnorge and MS Nordlys, Expedition Style Voyages include a full onboard Expedition Team offering more opportunities for learning and discovery for more active travelers; additional "expedition" style on board activities, lectures, and daily discussions; and access to specialty hikes with the Expedition Team, who provide expert insights into Norway's wildlife, geography, natural phenomenon and culture. Expedition Style Voyages are available year-round, with activities and excursions created specifically for each season.

Maritime nostalgia lovers and history buffs will want to take note of Hurtigruten's new Vintage Era Voyages which take guests "back in time" to 1964 while aboard the MS Lofoten, the oldest ship in the fleet. To enhance the experience of a journey to the past, guests can join activities and excursions not available on regular coastal sailings: fishing from the deck, trivia, auctions and a special ice swimming excursion. And because the MS Lofoten is smaller than other Hurtigruten ships, she will visit all 34 ports on the route as well as several other ports that are inaccessible to the larger ships.

Spicing up an already highly-regarded onboard menu plan, Hurtigruten has now added a new a la carte dinner menu on nine of its coastal voyage ships. This allows guests the freedom to enjoy the regular 3-course menu or upgrade to the a la carte menu. Options for a la carte diners range from 2- to 5-course meals and are available for a small upgrade fee starting at $19 US. As with all meals on Hurtigruten's coastal ships, the Coastal Kitchen concept prevails, with seasonal ingredients taking center stage in each dish - all sourced locally at the 34 ports visited on each ships' journey up and down the scenic west coast of Norway.

All pricing for the brochure is done in Canadian dollar pricing making it easier for the travel agent and consumer to calculate costs.

Hurtigruten's Announces $64 Million U.S. Upgrade to Four Ships

New Look, New Menus in Ship Makeovers

TORONTO -   Hurtigruten announced it will be doing major renovations and upgrades to four of its ships in 2016. All four of the mid-1990s built ships are being upgraded with new interiors and furnishings reflecting a modern Scandinavian design inspired by Norway’s scenic fjord-indented west coast. Hurtigruten, represented in Canada by GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel and Tours, is the world leader in exploration travel.

“Our ship upgrades aim to ensure our position as an innovator and leading force in nature-based explorer travels in polar waters,” says CEO Daniel Skjeldam. “We continue to reinvent the Hurtigruten experience by combining tradition, innovation and sustainability,” added Skjeldam.

The four ships will be rotated through the Norwegian based shipyard with work expected to take less for each of the four ships: the MS Polarlys (completed by Feb. 2); MS Kong Harald (Feb. 7); MS Nordkapp (April 19); and MS Nordnorge (Nov. 18). The new MS Spitsbergen, undergoing a more major upgrade to fit in with the current fleet, will launch in spring 2016. Hurtigruten is expected to invest more than $64 million U.S. in the renovations.

The updated look for these ships has been named New Arctic Interior and will reflect the breath-taking coastal landscapes in a stylish and yet unpretentious manner. All of the ship's common areas, reception foyers, cafes and bistro areas and the aft deck will be renovated. The colours will be earthy and derived from the coast and the sea, while making use of many natural materials, such as wood, slate and leather. Designs and shapes are expected to bear a resemblance to those found in nature - such as the flow of the waves or the strength of the majestic fjords.

The ongoing transformation of the restaurants and menu items will continue to evolve. Hurtigruten has partnered with dozens of local food suppliers to develop the Coastal Kitchen concept. With seasonal ingredients, often harvested the same day, guests are able to enjoy the freshest and best Norwegian food available.

A range of fresh pastries from the ship’s own bakeries will be offered and barbeque stands are being added to the outside decks. The all-important bar will be moved to the panoramic lounge, offering incredible views as guests enjoy an afternoon or evening cocktail.

Hurtigruten is a world leader in expedition voyages, sailing to the most remote of destinations, including Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic’s Spitsbergen, as well as year-round along Norway's coast and to Europe in the spring and fall. The company’s fleet of 13 intimate ships, which each carries 100 to 646 guests, allows travellers to enjoy the scenery and culture of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere.

GLP Worldwide has produced a comprehensive 2015/16 Explorer Voyages 126-page brochure featuring cruises to Antarctica, Greenland, Spitsbergen and Europe. The brochure features spectacular photography and provides detailed itineraries, ship layout, pricing, terms and conditions but also some useful information on the history and culture of the area. All pricing for the brochure is done in Canadian dollar pricing making it easier for the travel agent and consumer to calculate costs.
