Day 1: Oslo – Myrdal – Flam – Balestrand
Morning departure from Oslo. Board the Bergen Railway and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Hallingdal valley and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Eurail has called this 300-mile journey the “most scenic rail trip in Europe.” At the village of Myrdal, you’ll transfer to the Flam Railway. A marvel of Norwegian engineering, it is one of the world’s steepest railway lines on a normal gauge. The trip begins at 2,841 feet above sea level and spirals around and through the mountain. Along the way, you’ll see spectacular mountains, steep ravines, lush valleys, and the thundering Kjos Waterfall. Lunch in Flam on your own. Later in the afternoon, embark on a ferry ride to the picturesque village of Balestrand. You will dock just steps away from your final destination tonight. There, you’ll dine and spend the night at the venerable Kvikne’s, Norway’s famous wooden hotel. [D]
Day 2: Balestrand – Bergen
After a buffet breakfast and a day at leisure, you will leave Balestrand in the late afternoon by ferry. Depending on the day of the week, you might have an option to leave Balestrand in the early morning. For the next four hours, you’ll enjoy the gorgeous scenery of the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest fjord, before arriving in the historic city of Bergen. You will disembark near the Fish Market in central Bergen. [B]
