Day 1: Kirkenes – Inari
This tour of Lapland begins in Kirkenes, where you’ll be met by your private driver-guide at the Hurtigruten pier, airport or your hotel. Travel along the Neidenfjord, through wide highland marshes to Tana Bru on the Norway–Finland border. The river that runs along the frontier is said to offer the best salmon fishing in Europe. Continue via Utsjoki to Inari, a wild and barren – yet utterly captivating – landscape. Check into the Hotel Kultahovi for two nights.

Day 2: Inari
In the morning, visit SIDA, home of the Sami Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Options include hiking to the beautiful Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church; sightseeing by airplane over Lake Inari; river excursions by boat; white-water rafting; a cruise on Inari Lake to the Sami holy island of Ukko, named for the sky god of Finnish mythology; museum visits; or shopping for handicrafts. In the evening, you’ll visit a reindeer-herding family and learn about reindeer and the everyday life of modern Sami. You’ll be served coffee and biscuits in a Sami lavvo tent. [B]

Day 3: Inari – Kirkenes
Depart Inari. Enjoy the wonderful views along Inari Lake as you travel to the Sami village of Sevettijarvi, where you’ll see a Russian Orthodox church. Continue to the village of Naatamo, close to the Finnish-Norwegian border, before reaching Kirkenes. You will be dropped off at the airport, pier or hotel. [B]
